Ivander Adhyasta Mahardika
“Moving countries is hard.”
Moving to London from Jakarta, the largest city in South East Asia, one of the most dynamic, chaotic, busy cities you'll ever find.
In early 2018, her bestfriend provided solace with the offer of a blind date. A blind double date, to be precise. Her, her boyfriend and his bestfriend.
Abby was skeptical. The words “blind date” made her laugh and cringe but she was also intrigued. If your bestfriend who knows you inside out and she thinks you would be well-suited to someone, surely the odds are in your favour, right? No?
The venue of choice was Browns Covent Garden in St. Martin. However, the timing was less than ideal. She realised she was too late that she had managed to double book with the leaving party of her greatest university pal who was about to leave for Paris; an evening which she definitely could not miss.
Determined not to cancel either event, she spent the day with her uni buddy drinking gin and tonics well into the evening and in Cinderella’s style, at 10pm rushed to meet the date trio for the late sitting at the chosen venue. Unwittingly, in her excitement and nervousness, Abby accidentally got rather drunk. She tried to do her best to cover in front of the three, “Hey, I’m trying very hard not to fall off my chair” with “I’ve just moved back from Jakarta and I am totally nonchalant”, to limited success.
A couple of minutes later, she spotted someone familiar across their table. That man, oh wait, she couldn’t even remember his name since she was drunk. Her bestfriend nudged her arm as she kept on focusing her eyes on the man in black suit. “Ivander Adhyasta Mahardika. You’ve been friends with him since two years ago, stupid.”
Ivander, yes.
Abby shook her head trying so hard to come back to her sense.
He came into the same venue with his parents and they caught each other’s eyes. Abby had other ideas. She explained to her bestfriend that the blind date was a failure and she also told her that she wanted to talk to Ivander. Fortunately, her bestfriend understood and she actually knew what Abby was trying to do.
Abby got up from her seat and she tried to give him the eye again, did her best saunter past him when she walked to the bar. Clearly it worked. A few moments later, he came up to her and they had the most awkward conversation ever. He made her giggle by saying that she was paled-skinned, he also realized that she got multiple birthmarks on her face and he called that exotic.
Ivander politely asked Abby whether she wanted to say hi, or not to his parents and she absolutely had no heart to reject that. The moment when Abby introduced herself in front of his parents, his father was shocked. It turned out that Ivander’s dad was Abby’s dad business partner and even until this day, his mother claims that she knew from that moment Ivander and Abby would be together.
After that night, they got more closer and within 6 weeks,
They were engaged.
